Logan’s Story

A few years ago, we spoke with Karen, Logan’s mom, as she described her journey to find seizure control for her son and their experience with using KetoCal® while on the ketogenic diet. Here is their story.

I’m Karen, and I have three children, with my son Logan being the youngest. Logan is 14 years old. He is full of life, he loves to play outdoors and go to the park, and he'll always introduce himself to new people.

Logan has been suffering from seizures most of his life. It started with one per year, then, as he got older, it got worse. He started having seizures that were one hour long. He has tried every single medication there is. He was very tired, sluggish, and we got to the point where the neurologist here said: “There is nothing I can do for him.”

I was crying. I literally broke down, and I'm not the kind of parent or person that sits back, and you're not going to tell me my kid is just going to have to suffer. That's when I got on the computer and did some research, and I found out about the medical ketogenic diet.

The medical ketogenic diet is not offered anywhere in the state of Nevada. I had to go outside of the state. I just told myself that I needed to do this. I needed to do this for him. I needed to do this for myself and for my family. I love our healthcare team, and I'm in constant contact with the doctor and the nutritionist. If he needs a refill on one of his meds or if I have a question about the diet, they are just a phone call away.

As soon as Logan started the diet, I saw an immediate change. A significant decrease in seizures. He's off of the meds that were making him drowsy, and he's more enthusiastic about learning. I knew I was doing the right thing because I saw the progress and the change, so it made me want to continue the medical ketogenic diet.

Using KetoCal made the medical ketogenic diet so much easier. I don't have to worry about the ratios when making Logan's food because everything is already in there. I mix it to make chocolate pudding, his favorite.

For the g-tube feedings, I use the KetoCal formula. It's so much easier in a carton. Everything is in there. I don't have to mix anything. I just shake it up and pour it down his tube.

KetoCal Connect is a lot of help. I go on there, I get recipes. There's help, there's support. There is a starter kit that KetoCal offers new parents dealing with the ketogenic diet. Everything you need is in that starter kit. If your child is suffering from epilepsy, don't give up. There is help out there. You need to fight for your child and ask a lot of questions.

I'm very happy with the progress. Logan has come so far. He's a fighter, and he's very strong for everything he has overcome. Sometimes I just stare, and I just look into his eyes, and he'll just look at me and smile. And just to see that smile, I know that it was all worth it.

KetoCal® is a medical food for the dietary management of drug-resistant epilepsy, is intended for individuals 1 year of age and older and must be used under medical supervision.
